2 PhD student positions in III-nitride-based lasers - Göteborg

apartmentChalmers Tekniska Högskola AB placeGöteborg calendar_month

Join our team at the forefront of optoelectronics innovation! The successful candidate will play an essential role in the development of surface-emitting semiconductor lasers that only exist in a few research laboratories in the world. You will be given the opportunity to work in one of the world-leading groups on blue-UV surface-emitting lasers and combine device design and numerical simulations with device processing and characterization in close collaboration with international partners who are experts on epitaxial growth.

About us

The Photonics Laboratory at the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience (MC2) is a dynamic research group of about 35 members, focusing on optoelectronics, ultrafast optics, and fiber-optical communication. Our primary research includes ultraviolet (UV) and blue surface-emitting devices such as VCSELs, PCSELs, LEDs, and RCLEDs.

We specialize in device design and simulation, laser fabrication, and material and device characterization.

We have developed a novel thin-film lift-off process for AlGaN materials based on electrochemical etching, enabling the integration of III-nitride thin films with photonic structures like dielectric cavities with improved quality factors. This innovation has led to several breakthroughs, including the world’s first blue VCSEL with a high-contrast grating for polarization pinning, thin-film flip-chip UVB LEDs, and optically pumped VCSELs at 310 and 275 nm.

Recently, we also demonstrated the first optically pumped UV-B and UV-C PCSELs.

We are now looking to expand our team with two PhD students: one focusing on blue PCSELs and the other on UV VCSELs.

Who we are looking for

We seek candidates with the following qualifications:

  • To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in physics, material science, photonics, electrical engineering or a relevant field
  • Knowledge in semiconductor physics and optoelectronic devices
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
The following experience will strengthen your application:
  • Experience from device simulations, device fabrication in a clean room environment or device characterization

You should be able to work independently as well as in a group.

What you will do

As a PhD student in our research group, you will focus on developing blue PCSELs or UV VCSELs, engaging in experimental work. You will receive hands-on training in device fabrication using advanced equipment in our clean room and in the characterization of fabricated devices in our measurement lab.

Additionally, you will have access to our in-house-developed simulation tools for laser design and modeling. This position offers the unique opportunity to collaborate closely with international research partners specializing in epitaxial growth, ensuring a dynamic and globally connected research experience.

You will also:

  • Take courses at an advanced level within the Graduate school of Mictrotechnology and nanoscience
  • Develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing.
  • The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to up to 20 percent of working hours.
Contract terms and what we offer
  • The PhD-positions are fully funded from start
  • As a PhD student at Chalmers, you are an employee and enjoy all employee benefits. Read more about working at Chalmers and our benefits for employees.
  • The position is limited to four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which extends the position to five years.
  • A dynamic and inspiring working environment in the coastal city of Gothenburg.
  • A starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025).
